This is a good time to sow Fruiting plants like Aubergines, Cucumber, French Beans, Marrow, Peas, Peppers, Pumpkin, Runner Beans, Squash, Sweetcorn, Tomatoes, but it would not be a good time to sow Leaf plants like Basil, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbages, Celery, Dill, Florence Fennel, Kale, Lettuce, Spinach, Swiss Chard*

1948 – Israel is declared to be an independent state and a provisional government is established. Immediately after the declaration, Israel is attacked by the neighboring Arab states, triggering the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

1961 – American civil rights movement: The Freedom Riders bus is fire-bombed near Anniston, Alabama, and the civil rights protesters are beaten by an angry mob.

1993 – Death of the original Citizen Kane - William Randolph Hearst Jr., American newspaper magnate (b. 1908)
